KYEM TESTS ALERT NOTIFICATION SYSTEM
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Dec. 9, 2014) – Earlier this afternoon, while participating in a national test of Kentucky’s Emergency Alert Notification System, an inadvertent message was sent to mobile devices in the Laurel County area with the text: “Civil Emergency in this area until 11:50 a.m. MST. Prepare for action.” The error was discovered immediately due to the quick response of the public contacting local emergency management officials and the media. A follow-up message to disregard the previous message was immediately dispatched by Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) through the same system, and social media advised the public to please disregard the previous notification.
Kentucky Emergency Management is investigating the event to ensure delivery of timely emergency messaging.
