KYEM UNVEILS 2011 KENTUCKY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EARTHQUAKE AWARENESS POSTER
FRANKFORT, KY. (April 25, 2011) - The Kentucky Division of Emergency Management (KYEM) will honor the 2011 Earthquake Awareness Poster Contest winner on Thursday, April 28, 2011, at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School located in Henderson, Ky.
In 2009, KYEM and the Kentucky Center for School Safety (KCSS) worked together with two Kentucky elementary school teachers to develop a KYEM Earthquake Awareness Educational Program and Earthquake Instructional Unit for third through fifth grades. This five-hour educational awareness unit is designed to educate both children and adults in Kentucky communities and is available for download on the KYEM Earthquake Program website at www.kyem.ky.gov/programs/earthquake/.
This unit is taught each year during Earthquake Awareness Month in February. As a part of the unit, students across Kentucky were given the opportunity to create a classroom poster promoting earthquake awareness and submit their posters for competition. A statewide poster winner will be selected again from each grade level and winning posters will be used to promote Earthquake Awareness.
In addition, The Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School will participate in the Great Central US ShakeOut! on April 28, at 10:15 (CDT). To date, more than 330,383 Kentuckians have signed up to participate and practice "Drop! Cover! Hold On!" in this annual event and over 2.8 million overall have registered. To sign up and learn more about the Great American ShakeOut visit www.shakeout.org/centralus/register/.
