(May 13, 2011) - On Monday, May 16, 2011, Kentucky and several Central U.S. states, along with federal government agencies, volunteer organizations and the private sector will begin a weeklong preparedness exercise based upon a catastrophic earthquake in the New Madrid Earthquake Zone, which is located in the heart of the United States.

    FRANKFORT, KY. (May 5, 2011) - Gov. Steve Beshear announced yesterday that Kentucky's request for federal assistance has been granted by President Obama. This Major Presidential Disaster Declaration makes Public Assistance Program (PA) and Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding available to the Commonwealth. All other requests, including the Individuals and Household Assistance Program (IA), are under review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

    FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 4, 2011) – Governor Steve Beshear was notified tonight that President Barack Obama has approved his request for a major disaster declaration for Kentucky. After learning that Federal Emergency Management Agency personnel in Kentucky had submitted a letter to the President recommending granting the disaster declaration, Gov. Beshear immediately called the White House to urge a quick response.

    FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 4, 2011) – At the direction of Governor Steve Beshear, nearly 600 Kentucky National Guard troops are currently assisting flood relief efforts in six western Kentucky counties. Floodwaters continue to rise along the lower Ohio and Mississippi rivers, threatening homes and businesses. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects the rivers will reach crest in most locations in Kentucky on Thursday and Friday.

    FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 3, 2011) –Five days after his initial visit to flooded areas in far western Kentucky, Gov. Steve Beshear says rising floodwaters still pose significant danger to homes and communities along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Gov. Beshear visited Fulton, McCracken and Marshall counties today to assess response efforts. He also visited the recently opened Regional Emergency Coordination Center (RECC) at the Benton Armory.

(May 2, 2011) – Governor Steve Beshear today warned citizens in western Kentucky that flood projections are worsening, and announced plans to visit several affected counties again on Tuesday. Local officials began evacuating residents in Hickman, Ledbetter and Smithland because of the rising water.

(March 2, 2011) - At approximately 10:07 AM (Eastern Standard Time) Tuesday, March 8, the National Weather Service (NWS), partnering with Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM), Kentucky Weather Preparedness Committee (KWPC) and Kentucky Broadcast Association (KBA) will issue a tornado warning test message.   • Fourth Flood Victim Recovered

    FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2011) - Rescue workers have recovered the missing 11-year-old child in Graves County, who was apparently swept away by rushing waters as the horse drawn buggy she was in attempted to cross a rain swollen creek. The family was returning home, near Wingo, Ky. via Roscoe Road when the accident occurred Thursday night. Overnight, emergency rescue team members recovered the bodies of three other children who were in the family buggy. The mother and another child were able to make it to safety.

    FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 20, 2011) - State and local officials continue tracking a winter storm as it moves across the Commonwealth. Since late last week, the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management (KYEM), along with local and state officials, have been tracking this system through the National Weather Service (NWS). The Commonwealth Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) does not expect to activate beyond Level One (normal operations), but is maintaining increased situational awareness and prepared to offer assistance to local governments, if requested.
