  • Kentucky Emergency Management Announces Hazard Mitigation Award

    FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 9, 2012) - The Commonwealth of Kentucky has received notice from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of its approval of a mitigation project grant for the city of Cumberland, in Harlan County, Kentucky. The mitigation grant, in the amount of $2,944,444, will be administered by the Kentucky Emergency Management Hazard Mitigation Program. FEMA will provide 90 percent or $2.6 million of the project funding; the Kentucky Department for Local Government will provide 9 percent or $264,960 and Harlan County Fiscal Court will provide 1 percent or $30,000.00.

The weekend’s training activities will also be hosted in part by Daviess County Emergency Management.

(Mar. 7, 2012) – State officials and the Kentucky Department for Public Health are reminding Kentuckians about guidelines for safety during post storm clean-up regarding tetanus, mold cleanup and food safety. The guidelines come after Friday’s severe storms and tornadoes that caused widespread damage, injuries and loss of life.
  • ACCESS TO WEST LIBERTY RESTORED FOR RESIDENTS ONLY

    FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 6, 2012) West Liberty emergency management officials have opened access to the town for residents and media ONLY, at this time, following Friday's deadly tornadoes. Roads into town had been closed in order to conduct full search and rescue missions as well as to clear debris so traffic and residents may travel safely. Residents will be required to pass a safety check point for clearance before proceeding.

  • COMMONWEALTH EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER ACTIVATED TO LEVEL II

    FRANKFORT, KY. (March 2, 2012) – Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) will activate the Commonwealth Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) to Level II in response to a severe weather system expected to move into the central regions of the Commonwealth today. At Level II, the CEOC is staffed with additional KYEM support staff and personnel from the National Weather Service (NWS). The CEOC tracks and maintains situational awareness and response to requests for assistance.

With that, Governor Steve Beshear signed a proclamation declaring March 2012 as Severe Weather Awareness Month, urging all Kentuckians to be prepared for severe weather.

    FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb 9, 2012) - The Commonwealth of Kentucky has received notice from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of approval and the awarding of a mitigation grant totaling $8 million to the University of Kentucky. FEMA will provide 75 percent or $6 million the University of Kentucky will provide 25 percent or $2 million.

The mitigation grant, in the amount of $1,554,855, will be administered through the State Hazard Mitigation Program, which is managed and administered by Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM).

(Dec 1, 2011) - The Commonwealth of Kentucky has received notice from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of approval and awarding of a mitigation grant in the amount of $1,207,939 to the City of Muldraugh, Ky. for the new construction of a stand-alone, single-use, tornado safe room.
