Connie Malone, Brenn Combs Named to Key Posts
Frankfort, Ky. (May 27, 2008) – Kentucky Justice & Public Safety Cabinet Secretary J. Michael Brown today announced two key appointments within the cabinet’s Office of Legal Services. Connie Malone has been named Deputy General Counsel for the Justice Cabinet, and Brenn Combs has been promoted to General Counsel for the Department of Corrections.
Malone began her career in state government in 1985 as an assistant attorney general. In 1987 she joined the Department of Corrections, and was appointed deputy general counsel in 1989. She later returned to the Office of the Attorney General, serving in the Capital Litigation Branch, Criminal Appellate Division, and Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Control Division. Most recently she served as a program planner for the Prosecutor’s Advisory Council.
Malone received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Illinois, and her juris doctorate from the University of Kentucky College of Law.
“Connie Malone brings a wealth of talent and experience in corrections and criminal justice matters to this role,” said Brown. "I look forwarding to working with her on the many, diverse issues facing the Justice Cabinet.”
Combs joined state government in 2002 as a staff attorney for the Department of Corrections Office of General Counsel, and later the Justice Cabinet’s Office of Legal Services. He is regarded as the state’s expert in sentence calculations, having published and lectured on the subject for several years.
He graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1998, and also holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Alice Lloyd College.
A native of Pikeville, Combs is a former law enforcement officer with the Pippa Passes and Hazard police departments, and is a U.S. Army reservist.
“We have worked with Brenn Combs for several years here at the Department of Corrections and have always found him to be well-versed in his correctional knowledge. We welcome him to our team,” said Corrections Commissioner LaDonna Thompson.
