FRANKFORT, Ky. – National Trails Day is June 6, 2009, and organizations across Kentucky will be celebrating with hikes, trail projects and other special events to call attention to the more than 3,000 miles of recreational trails in the state.

Gov. Steve Beshear has issued a proclamation noting the importance of trails and urging Kentuckians to participate in a trail event on June 6.

“This is a great time to recognize the value of the great trails we have in Kentucky and what opportunities they provide residents and tourists,” said Tourism, Arts and Heritage Sec.  Marcheta Sparrow. “Our trails help promote adventure tourism and attract guests from across the country.”

National Trails Day, sponsored by the American Hiking Society, began in 1993 and has grown to more than 1,100 events across the nation.
