FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 25), 2004) -- Visitors to the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville can pledge to do their part in child and adult abuse prevention by simply signing their names.
At the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services’ display, guests are invited to add their signature to a 3’ x 5’ flag featuring the slogan, "Keeping kids and seniors close to the heart of Kentucky." The center of the flag’s design is a blue image of the state with a red heart in the middle.
By signing the flag, visitors are making a commitment to prevent child and elder abuse and report it if they suspect it.
The flag will be flown over the state capitol in October, which is national Domestic Violence Prevention Month.
Cabinet staff can also provide fairgoers with information about child and elder abuse and neglect, including a list of signs that someone may be abused.
Space on the two-sided flag is filling up quickly.
"We are pleased that visitors to the fair, who are there to have a good time, are also mindful of something as important as abuse prevention," said cabinet Secretary James W. Holsinger Jr., M.D. "It truly takes us all, being attentive in our own communities, to keep children and senior citizens safe from harm."
The cabinet’s display borders the Main Street and Health Horizons areas in the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center’s South Wing.
The State Fair runs through Sunday night, Aug. 29, and the South Wing is open daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children and seniors, and parking is $5 per vehicle. For more information about the State Fair, visit www.kystatefair.org
