FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 6, 2003) - Kentucky’s Medicaid Program is making more patient information available to health care providers with the help of internet-based technology.
By accessing Medicaid’s Internet Information Processing System (IIPS), all actively enrolled Medicaid providers are now able to instantly retrieve any Medicaid patients’ eligibility information, third party insurance information, and patient liability.
Recipient screens include the recipients’ name, identification number, date of birth, and date of death (when applicable), for each recipient selected.
This is a significant addition to the IIPS because it will allow participating Medicaid providers instant access to information when recipients are unable to produce a medical assistance card at the office. This instant access will reduce the time waiting for eligibility verification for both the provider and the recipient needing assistance.
The addition of the recipient data will allow faster and more accurate information to providers when submitting their bills to Medicaid, thus reducing the number of claims that have to be resubmitted.
“The Department for Medicaid Services is using web-based technology which will make it easier for us to retrieve information faster and will allow more than one way to access much needed data,” said Dr. Donald Neel, an Owensboro pediatrician and former Kentucky Medical Association president.
Currently the IIPS contains specific patient information relating to Medicaid’s primary care case management program known as the Kentucky Patient Access and Care system, Nursing Facilities, Presumptive Eligibility, Recipient Data, and Qualifying Income Trust (QIT). The Department for Medicaid Services in conjunction with its information system contractor, Unisys, continues to add data to the IIPS to assist Medicaid providers with their needs.
This internet-based system contains protected, personal identifiable health information. Because of this, the data contained on the system is subject to the privacy and security regulations contained in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Providers will have to use log-on ID’s and a password to gain access to the information.
Authorized providers can access the IIPS through the Department for Medicaid Services web site: http://chs.ky.gov/dms/iips/default.htm
