Attorney General Conway Announces Pulaski Man Convicted of Threatening Judge & Commonwealth’s Attorney
Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway and his Office of Special Prosecutions today announced the conviction of a man in Pulaski Circuit Court on charges stemming from a threatening letter he sent in December 2008, stating he would kill Pulaski Circuit Judge David Tapp, Pulaski Commonwealth’s Attorney Eddie Montgomery, and other officials.
Claude Cox, Jr., 43, today admitted to his actions as he entered a guilty plea to retaliating against a participant in the legal process, terroristic threatening, and being a second degree persistent felony offender.
The Attorney General’s Office of Special Prosecution handled the case, and Special Judge Gary Payne presided over the proceedings due to the conflicts of interest created by the defendant’s actions.
"We were called to action as a result of threats made to officials of the justice system, a situation that is taken very seriously by this office," said General Conway. "I am pleased that we were able to bring this matter to a speedy and appropriate resolution."
The Commonwealth today recommended a total sentence of eight years imprisonment on the charges, consecutive to the defendant’s sentence on unrelated charges in a separate case of manslaughter and intimidating a judicial officer. Judge Payne accepted the sentencing recommendation.
