Attorney General Conway Alerts Kentucky Consumers To Graco Crib Recall
Attorney General Jack Conway and his KY Kids Alert partners want to make sure Kentucky consumers are aware of an important recall announcement today from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) involving Graco-branded drop side cribs. The CPSC announced a voluntary recall of 217,000 of the cribs, manufactured by LaJobi, due to entrapment and suffocation hazards.
According to the CPSC, when the drop side hardware breaks or fails allowing the drop side to detach from the crib, it creates a hazardous gap between the drop side and crib mattress in which infants and toddlers can become wedged or entrapped or even fall from the crib. Consumers are urged to stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
The CPSC and LaJobi have received a total of 99 reports of drop side incidents, including hardware breakage and drop side detachment. Two of the incidents involved children becoming entrapped in the gap created by the detached drop side. There have been six reports of children falling due to the drop side failure, resulting in one report of a mild concussion. "As a father, I know there is nothing more important than the safety of our children," General Conway said. "That's why I want to encourage Kentucky parents and child care providers to make sure they sign up to receive important child product recall alerts from the CPSC."
In February, General Conway partnered with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) and the CPSC to launch KY Kids Alert, a statewide initiative to educate Kentucky parents and child care providers about the importance of product recall information and to ensure that child care facilities across the Commonwealth receive product recall alerts from the CPSC.
As a result of the KY Kids Alert initiative, nearly 3,000 Kentucky child care centers and certified family child care homes are now receiving these potentially lifesaving child product recall alerts. The partners have also distributed 15,000 KY Kids Alert bookmarks to local health departments, child care trainers, child care facility inspectors, school resource centers and local public libraries across Kentucky.
Consumers can sign up to receive child product recall alerts through the Attorney General's website at www.ag.ky.gov or call the CPSC's Recall Hotline at 1-800-638-2772.
General Conway and his Office of Consumer Protection have worked hard to address child safety issues; including participating in a multi-state investigation of and settlement with Mattel in December 2008 regarding lead in more than 1.9 million recalled toys. In 2009, CPSC announced 29 recalls of toys and children's products for lead alone, recalling more than 1.4 million articles.
In addition, the Attorney General's Office along with the Department for Public Health and local health departments have worked to ensure that all Kentucky public pools comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act to protect children from potentially fatal drain entrapment.
