Attorney General Conway to Educate Kentuckians about Dangers of Prescription Drug Abuse and Cybercrimes at 2010 State Fair
Attorney General Jack Conway today announced that his office will be educating people about prescription drug abuse and the dangers that lurk online at this year's Kentucky State Fair, which runs from August 19 to August 29 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center.
"Thousands of Kentucky families will be visiting the fair this year, and I hope they will stop by our booth to learn about two issues that can help make our state a safer place to live, work and raise a family," General Conway said.
The booth, located in the law enforcement area of the South Wing, will feature live demonstrations about social-networking sites for parents to familiarize themselves with how teens are socializing online. A video educating parents, students, and teachers about the importance of cybersafety and "thinking before you post" will be available at the booth.
Attorney General Conway and his staff have traveled across the state and talked with more than 40,000 students, parents and teachers about the dangers that exist online and about how they need to monitor information they post on social-networking sites.
"The Spring Break photos that seem clever or funny when you are 14 or 15 are not so clever when you're applying to college or applying for your first job," General Conway said.
Educational information about prescription drug abuse and prevention will also be available at the Office of the Attorney General's (OAG) state fair booth. OAG staff will be instructing parents to monitor prescription drugs in their home, secure those medications in a place where children cannot access them, and dispose of expired or unneeded prescriptions.
"What we're finding is that Kentucky kids are becoming addicts in their own homes because prescription drugs are available," General Conway said. "We need parents to join with us and help us protect our children from an issue that's touched so many across the Commonwealth."
People visiting the booth may also sign up for a daily giveaway. Each day a name will be drawn to receive a Lexmark printer courtesy of Lexmark and ConnectKentucky. ConnectKentucky partners with the Office of the Attorney General to help educate Kentuckians about cybersafety.
