On Saturday, April 11, Jamie Donaldson, of Georgetown, will demonstrate wood turning on the lathe from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.

Like many high school students of the `50’s and `60’s, Donaldson began his wood education in shop class. He continued to be fascinated by wood and began to pursue wood turning in 1986, when he added a lathe to his wood shop’s tool inventory. After attending a wood-turning workshop in 1987, Donaldson began collecting works by wood artists at craft shows and began taking additional wood- turning workshops. His numerous workshop teachers taught him to see the potential beauty in wood and to make many of his own tools.

“I selected workshops and teachers who could lead me down a new path of interest and exploration, and I gained from their experience,” states Donaldson. “The hours I spend at the lathe are a communion. Wood is a gift of Nature and each piece is unique and full of potential surprises. My goal is to allow the beauty of the wood to evolve according to its natural design.”

Donaldson is active in the Bluegrass Area Woodturners Association and has a lathe-turned work titled, “Red Mallee Burl Bowl,” in the center’s exhibit “Turn, Turn, Turn: Lathe-Turned Works by Kentucky Artisans.” Works by Donaldson are regularly available at the center, located just off Interstate 75 at Berea, Exit 77. The center’s exhibits, shopping and travel information areas are open daily, year-round, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the cafe open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
